Why Should We Name Them?
Petition Ministries Why Should we Name Them
Do you remember the adopt-a-doll craze in the 1980’s with dolls that had puffy faces reminiscent of vegetables? Today there are hundreds of these doll adoptions by a myriad of manufacturers. Maybe you’re too young to remember the buying frenzy of those days, but do you know someone who has a stuffed animal that becomes a virtual pet online where children can play games and fill a
In many cases adopters choose a name for their toy or virtual responsibility and register it with the toy maker or website. A certificate may even accompany these “adoptions.” God Himself invented the idea of adoption. (See Romans 8:15, 23; 9:4; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5) So, it would not be such a strange thing to “adopt” a baby lost through abortion and register it with the Maker, would it?
We humans like to name things. Giving a name is a sign of acceptance of responsibility and affinity. Our first ancestor Adam, was given the task of naming all the animals, and then also his wife and children. (Genesis 2:19&20) We name our toys, our pets, our boats, our cars, and our children. It is the right and privilege of being human. A name gives the object or person an acknowledgment that the named one has value. If we can give arbitrary names to stuffed toys, we can certainly give names to babies lost through abortion!
The Bible has many lists of names. If you have ever sat down to read and come upon one of those lists, you might wonder why God allowed them all to be recorded. Firstly, He wanted an earthly record established for His Son. The genealogy was necessary to verify that Jesus was indeed a Son of Man. His virgin birth therefore designated Him as both the Son of God and the Son of Man.
He had to have that indisputable legal title as the perfect Man to get back the authority that Adam gave away, in the Garden of Eden, to the devil. Because Jesus completed His earthly mission, as Philippians 2:9 says, “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name”. So, we can be thankful God cared enough to record all those names.
Additionally, it’s apparent God cares a lot about individual names. Names represent who the person is and designate them from others. God’s Names describe His character. He allowed all those lists of names to be recorded because it shows us He cares for every single person ever created on the earth. He even keeps books of names in heaven.
Revelation 20:12 says, “And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.”
Because we understand the value of a name in God’s eyes, Petition Ministries has launched the “EVERY NAME COUNTS” petition drives to take on the responsibility of naming and honoring those children lost through abortion since Roe V Wade passed in 1973. We will register every name given on the website scroll and then through prayer teams, will submit those names back to God – the Maker, in order to “legally” acknowledge those lives and to make a statement to the world that they were of inestimable value.
There were no birth or death certificates issued for those precious lives who were created in God’s image. We only have the basic numbers, reported by an often reluctant industry, so EVERY NAME COUNTS. On a political petition, every name counts. If the collectors don’t come up with enough signatures, they can’t file their petition legally. Since Petition Ministries has a mandate from God to attempt to name and lay to rest through memorial services, the nearly 60 million souls lost – EVERY NAME COUNTS! The goal may seem insurmountable, but it won’t stop us from trying.
Anyone can participate in the petition drive, whether they have had an abortion or just know someone who did, or if they are simply concerned about the waste of life that threatens our society and want to make a statement about it. If you want to honor those babies and give them a name, dignity, and acknowledgment, register today for our EVERY NAME COUNTS petition. Once you name a baby, if you’d like, a free PDF adoption Certificate of Dignity can be sent to you to commemorate that child.
Churches or other ministries may wish to collect hundreds or thousands of names. While volunteer coordinators work to plan and prepare for memorial services in every county of every state in our nation, we will collect names of those babies symbolically adopted. Petitions in the local areas will be circulated at the same time and be coupled with our online collection. Names will be inscribed on scrolls and registered with Petition Ministries to maintain the records as a “legal” document of babies honored through the ministry.
